  1. Set servings: Enter the original number of servings and your desired number. The scale factor updates automatically. Use quick buttons (½×, 2×, 3×) for common adjustments.
  2. Edit ingredients: Modify the pre-populated sample recipe or clear and enter your own. For each ingredient, specify the name, amount, and unit.
  3. Scale: Click Scale to instantly calculate all scaled amounts. The tool displays smart fractions (½, ⅓, ¼, ⅔, ¾, etc.) for common values. Use Copy Scaled List to copy all results in a clean format.
  4. Conversions: Check the Common Conversions tab for a reference of standard kitchen measurement equivalents (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, grams, milliliters, etc.).

Recipe Scaler — Adjust Servings Instantly

Whether you're cooking for two or hosting a dinner party for twenty, our Recipe Scaler instantly adjusts all ingredient quantities to match your desired serving size. With smart fraction display, multiple unit support, and one-click scaling — all running entirely in your browser.

How Recipe Scaling Works

Recipe scaling multiplies each ingredient by a scale factor:

Scale Factor = Desired Servings ÷ Original Servings

For example, scaling a recipe from 4 servings to 6 gives a factor of 1.5×. Every ingredient amount is multiplied by 1.5: 2 cups of flour becomes 3 cups, ½ teaspoon of salt becomes ¾ teaspoon.

Smart Fraction Display

Nobody wants to measure 0.333 cups of sugar. Our scaler automatically converts decimal results to common kitchen fractions:

  • ⅛, ¼, ⅓, ⅜, ½, ⅝, ⅔, ¾, ⅞
  • Whole numbers plus fractions: 1 ½, 2 ⅓, 3 ¾
  • Values that don't match common fractions are shown as clean decimals

Quick Scale Buttons

Three one-click options for the most common scaling needs:

  • ½× (Halve): Perfect for reducing a large batch recipe to a more manageable size.
  • 2× (Double): The most common scaling — great for parties or meal prep.
  • 3× (Triple): For large gatherings, potlucks, or batch cooking.

Supported Units

The scaler supports 12 common kitchen measurement units:

  • Volume: Cup, Tablespoon, Teaspoon, Milliliter (ml), Liter (L)
  • Weight: Ounce (oz), Pound (lb), Gram (g), Kilogram (kg)
  • Count: Piece, Pinch, Whole

Kitchen Conversion Reference

The built-in reference table includes 13 essential kitchen conversions:

  • 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 237 ml
  • 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = 15 ml
  • 1 teaspoon = 5 ml
  • 1 oz (weight) = 28.35 g
  • 1 lb = 16 oz = 453.6 g
  • 1 kg = 2.205 lb
  • 1 L = 4.227 cups
  • 1 stick butter = ½ cup = 8 tbsp = 113 g

Tips for Successful Scaling

  • Linear scaling works for most cooking: Soups, stews, sauces, and casseroles scale linearly with excellent results.
  • Baking requires care: Leavening agents (baking powder, baking soda, yeast) may need non-linear adjustment for large scale changes (4× or more).
  • Seasonings to taste: When scaling up significantly, start with 75% of the scaled spice amount and adjust to taste.
  • Pan size matters: Doubling a recipe may require a larger pan or baking in batches to ensure proper cooking.
  • Cooking time: Scaled recipes may require different cooking times, especially for baked goods. Monitor doneness rather than relying solely on time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data safe?

Yes. All calculations happen 100% in your browser. No recipes or ingredients are sent to any server.

Can I enter my own recipe?

Absolutely! The tool comes with a sample recipe, but you can modify any ingredient, add new rows, or remove rows. There's no limit to the number of ingredients.

How does smart fraction display work?

Instead of showing 0.333 cups, the tool displays ⅓ cup. It recognizes common fractions: ⅛, ¼, ⅓, ⅜, ½, ⅝, ⅔, ¾, ⅞. For values that don't match a common fraction, it shows the decimal rounded appropriately.

Can I scale by any ratio?

Yes! Enter any original and desired serving count. The scale factor is automatically calculated. You can scale from 4 servings to 7, or from 12 to 3 — any combination works.

Does it handle baking adjustments?

The tool scales all ingredients linearly by the factor. Note that for baking, very large scale changes (4× or more) may require adjustments to leavening agents and baking time that aren't purely linear. The tool provides the proportional amounts as a starting point.
