Braille Translator — Convert Text to Braille
The Braille Translator is a free tool that converts regular text to Unicode Braille characters (Grade 1) and vice versa. It processes text entirely in your browser with real-time output, supporting letters, numbers, capitalization, and common punctuation.
What is Braille?
Braille is a tactile writing system used by people who are visually impaired. It was invented by Louis Braille in 1824. Each Braille character consists of a cell with up to six raised dots arranged in a 3×2 grid. There are 64 possible combinations, representing letters, numbers, punctuation, and special indicators.
Braille Grades
- Grade 1 (Uncontracted) — Each letter is represented individually. This tool uses Grade 1. It's the foundation of Braille literacy and is used internationally.
- Grade 2 (Contracted) — Uses contractions and short forms for common words and letter combinations. More efficient but harder to learn.
- Grade 3 (Shorthand) — Personal shorthand system, not standardized.
How This Tool Works
The translator maps each ASCII character to its corresponding Unicode Braille pattern (U+2800-U+28FF). Capital letters are preceded by the capital indicator (⠠). Numbers use the number indicator (⠼) followed by the letter pattern (since letters a-j correspond to digits 1-0 in Braille).
